Innovative Pedagogies in TVET: Lessons from Healthcare Education
Why has Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) struggled to equip students with the skills needed for today’s workforce? Traditional teaching methods often fail to meet the diverse learning needs of students or the demands of a dynamic labor market, especially in low-resource environments where work-based learning opportunities are limited. Drawing insights from healthcare education, a recent study presented at the UNESCO RCEP Seminar highlights how documentary-based learning, rooted in storytelling and video simulations, combined with culturally responsive teaching, can transform TVET. Platforms like YouTube and TikTok make learning engaging, relatable, and accessible, enabling students to connect theory with real-world applications. This approach aligns with Sustainable Development Goals and Kenya’s CBET framework, bridging the gap between education and workforce readiness by fostering problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills. By adopting narrative-based pedagogy and leveraging digital tools, TVET can deliver meaningful, practical, and culturally grounded learning experiences that prepare students for successful careers.
